Common Packing Mistakes (and how to avoid them)

No matter if it’s residential or commercial, when packing for a move the first thing you should do is decide if the cost is greater than the risk. If it fits within your budget, most moving companies provide additional packing services to safely pack your possessions before your move. If your items are irreplaceable it is often worth the additional pricing.

Packing Mistakes to Avoid when moving

1. Packing without organizing

You’ve spent all day moving, and it’s finally over. You’re in your new home, and you’re exhausted. All you want to do is brush your teeth and go to sleep. But wait, what box did you put the toothbrush in? And are the pillows in those boxes in the garage, or the ones in the living room? The last thing you want is to find yourself in a new house full of boxes and no idea where anything is. Avoid this by labeling your moving boxes by content and room. Don’t forget to keep like items together.

2. Not taking advantage of this opportunity to clean house

As you are organizing your possessions in preparation for packing, take the opportunity to let go of those items you just don’t need anymore. That old coffee maker you insisted on keeping in case the new one broke – 3 years ago, can probably go now. If you have the time, a yard sale is always a great way to get rid of the clutter without having to remove it yourself. You can also put the proceeds towards the price of hiring professional packers.

3. Beware the accumulated power of reading

When packing books (or any object that is small but heavy) always use small boxes. Large, heavy boxes are not only a pain in the neck (and back, and knees). The weight can affect the stability of the box itself, causing damage to your items and potential injury to your movers.

4. Waiting until the last minute

Even though we can help you move with as little as 24 hours’ notice, we don’t recommend that you treat your move that way. It’s not just packing, it’s preparation. There are many aspects of your move to consider such as transferring your cable, electric, and bills to your new address.
