Moving in the rain? Follow these tips for a smooth move.

As we enter our rainy season here in Naples many of us just want to stay home and cuddle up with a good book. Unfortunately, when you are moving you can’t just reschedule on account of the rain. Many moves are planned based on a specific date that you need to be out of your old residence. When your move has to go on, even in the rain, read these moving tips to help you prepare.

Tip #1: Cover Everything

It may take a little extra time, but properly covering your items to protect them from the rain will save you the hassle of drying out your soggy items, or the heartbreak of losing valuables to rain damage. Luckily, these supplies can be found at a decent price.

Furniture Pads

Cover your furniture with furniture pads. It will be protected from accidental bumps, and it provides a layer between your furniture and the rain.

Plastic Wrap, Tarps, Trash Bags

Once your moving team has covered your items with furniture pads, its times to add that much needed layer of rain protection. Plastic wrap or plastic sheeting is a good way to keep your items covered. Ask your moving company if they offer any moving supplies to protect from rain.

Remember, cardboard and rain are a bad combination

Depending on how long your items will be in the rain, and how long they will sit in a box before you have time to unpack, cardboard may be an issue. If you are going to use cardboard boxes in a heavy rain move, be sure to wrap them tight. In fact, you may want to consider making the switch to plastic containers for your move.

Tip #2: Don’t forget the flooring

While wrapping up your valuables remember to save some of those plastic sheets to protect your floor. The last thing you want to do after a move in the rain is spend exhausted hours cleaning the floors. Your movers should have the materials available to cover your floors, simply ask when scheduling your move.

Tip #3: Take special care with invaluable items

Make sure that you clearly mark items that absolutely cannot get wet. It also wouldn’t hurt to wrap water damage susceptible items with a little extra care. Not to mention a few extra layers of plastic wrapping.

Tip #4: Be safe

Moving in the rain is going to be messy. The best advice we can give you is: don’t rush. Take your time loading and unloading, and be careful driving on slippery roads. Another way to be safe during a move in the rain is to consider moving insurance. Accidents can happen anytime, but are more likely to happen during bad weather.
