Commercial Packing and Moving Tips
Every commercial move is different because every business is different. However, the 7 general commercial moving tips below should help make your next move a little easier. Of course, every move is different so contact your local movers for help.
1. Plan your move
Visit your new space and determine the layout before you fill it full of office supplies. Knowing where you want everything to go will make it easier on everyone. If your moving logistics requires multiple trips, remember to move in larger items like desks, and storage cabinets first. You don’t want to be tip-toeing around a floor full of computers and printers while trying to find the best spot for that desk.
2. Take advantage of this opportunity to start clean
Remember that bin of old phones, empty printer cartridges, and dead batteries gathering dust in the corner? Or what about those old files that you’re keeping, “just because”? Use this commercial move as an opportunity to start fresh.
3. Personal items should be moved by employees
Pictures, plants, and pens. Books, baubles, and bobbleheads. Make sure your employees know that they are responsible for the packing and transport of any items they personally own.
4. Empty all desks
Desks are often an odd shape, and in the moving world odd shaped items are often disassembled and flipped upside-down or on their side to fit securely and safety in spaces, which is why all desks should be emptied before a move. If desk drawers are removable it may be easier to simply remove each drawer and pack separately.
5. Label Everything
If your desks and furniture will be broken down during your move, label them so your movers know how to reassemble. Label all cords and keep them with the technology they belong to. You can also take pictures to see exactly what cords go where during reassembly.
6. Backup your computers
Having a backup for your hard drive is a good idea, even if you aren’t moving. Create a backup for each computer. Don’t transport the backups with the computers themselves.
7. File Cabinets
We know that nobody wants to deal with emptying those file cabinets. You will need to discuss with your movers to determine if they can stay intact during a move. If so, be sure to lock the drawers and secure them tightly. If you need to empty your filing cabinets be sure to label each box as well as the cabinet it belongs to.
